A former waiter and substitute teacher, Akers spent his first season with the Eagles as a long field goal and< kickoff specialist behind veteran Norm Johnson. Akers inked a contract extension in 2005 that will keep him in Philadelphia through 2010.

Allan Manganello at the Shaolin Kempo Jiu-Jitsu
Academy in Louisville and at Maxercise in
Philadelphia. Said Akers: "The martial arts influence
is the part where you don’t think about [the
kick]. You’ve trained yourself so much to where you
go and just do it. Same thing in a fight. You prepare
for that one instance where someone is coming at
you, and you’re not trying to think."
